Bangladesh’s Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina has been advised by many experts from various fields to balance the ties with its neighbouring countries like India and China. Sheikh Hasina has embarked on her Beijing visit recently. On the eve of her visit, Sheikh Hasina was told in a discussion that one regional power should be counterweight even a deterrent to the other. It is seen that the Bangladesh's support to India in the Joint Communiqué for a permanent seat at the UN Security Council was not comfortable for China because China did not support the council's reforms in 2004 as said by Harun ur Rashid, a former Bangladesh ambassador to the UN. He also added that Bangladesh needs all the diplomatic skills it has, to remove any concerns China have in this matter.

It is thought that China can be a counter weight to India which is a regional power in Bangladesh’s diplomatic relations. India has entry to Chittagong and Mangla ports of Bangladesh through land, rail and sea routes. Bangladesh has to find out a way to give China some form of deterrent by giving them access to Bangladesh. China is described as Bangladesh’s all weather friend by Ashfaqur Rahman, a former ambassador.

Chinese investment is encouraged in Bangladesh and they proposed a deep seaport at Sonadia, construction of an oil pipeline from Chittagong to Kunming in china and thinking about the potential of Kunming Myanmar road link. This worm relation between Bangladesh and China is also not going to worry India.
